At your first visit, your dentist will complete a comprehensive exam of your oral cavity. At regular check-ups, the following will occur:
Examination of diagnostic x-rays: These determine tooth and root positions, and can also detect tumors, decay, and bone loss.
Oral cancer screening: The dentist will check in the oral cavity for any signs of oral tumors.
Gum disease evaluation: The dentist will examine gums for signs of any periodontal disease.
Examination of tooth decay: Teeth will be checked with special instruments to help find and treat decay.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus, which is a hardened plaque that is difficult to remove from the tooth surface, is removed with dental instruments.

Removal of plaque: Plaque, which is a film that forms on teeth, can cause cavities or gum inflammation.
Teeth polishing: Polishing is the final step in removing stains and plaque that might have been missed during the other cleaning stages.
