Fluoride, which is a mineral that helps to strengthen and repair teeth, can be obtained two different ways from your dentist. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth and is effective in making teeth more decay-resistant. Sources in which fluoride is already present (such as certain foods and city drinking water) are systemic fluoride sources. Most people receive adequate fluoride from just systemic fluoride sources.
Professional Fluoride Treatments
Professional fluoride treatments, such as those used at New Image Dentistry, are more concentrated than daily toothpastes or fluoride rinses. At an appointment, fluoride is applied to the teeth generously and remains on the teeth, sinking into the enamel, for a few minutes. Usually, a patient should wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything in order to make sure the fluoride does its job.
